character summary
Nathaniel Horn is a 20-year old guy who is absolutely normal - he has a loving family and big dreams of getting into college and making a nice life for himself.
...This is all a lie.
The real Nathaniel Horn is dead. The "Nathaniel" that you see now killed him, but, uh, it was an accident, he swears. The guy just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time dealing highly illegal drugs and ran into a giant shapeshifting alien monster while passing by the sewer on his way home. Nathaniel pulled out a knife to protect himself, and in the scuffle that ensued, the knife kind of sort of made its way into his chest and killed him. Totally by accident. Seriously, if the giant alien monster wanted to kill him on purpose, they would've done so much quicker. Don't give it that look.
So, what's a shapeshifting alien monster to do? They decide to take the place of Nathaniel Horn, because a) they don't have anything better to do, and b) they honestly crave attention. They was kind of a rebel among its kind - sick of having to follow excessive amounts of useless rules and having to stay out of other planet's businesses, they hijacked a spacecraft to go explore the universe. The alien's joyride ended rather quickly, though, when the spacecraft's fuel ran out and they had to crash on on a nearby planet: Earth.
They miraculously survived the crash by the skin of their many teeth, but had to go into hiding when they learned that humans were unfortunately not used to more-or-less friendly giant alien monsters. The alien managed to copy human and animal forms and started learning about human culture, but they never found a way to fit in, really - they would always be that weird stranger who never had a real name or family or anything to call their own. And nowadays, you can't just get a home or a job without a past to rely on. A human past.
So, when Nathaniel Horn's body lay at the alien's feet, still warm, the alien decided to take the opportunity to take his place. It was a selfish wish, truly, but as the alien settled into Nathaniel's role, they started to feel like they actually started to care about the family they had invaded. Hey, maybe humans weren't so bad, after all.
Now, the alien has become the upstanding young man the real Nathaniel never was. He's nicer, more open, willing to pitch in to help and avoid the illegal wrongdoings Nathaniel was involved in.To the alien's new family, it was a miracle - Nathaniel had become a new man. He had always been the troubled sort, and now here he was, a role model in every way, a wonderful human being people could rely on.
Except he isn't actually human.
Whoops.
TL:DR: Nathaniel is a shapeshifting alien who is posing as a 20-year old guy because he wanted to have a good fun time and wanted to fit in. Personality wise, he's good-natured and joyful, though has a sarcastic, joking streak a mile wide, and has started to care about humanity in his time posing as a human on Earth.
